Our board-certified Dallas OB/GYNs have the knowledge, experience and expertise to provide our patients with minimally invasive gynecologic surgery options.
Our OB/GYNs are board certified, trained in the most up-to-date, advanced surgical procedures. OB/GYN surgery, when performed using minimally invasive gynecologic surgery techniques, provides patients with many advantages over traditional, open surgery.
What are the advantages of minimally invasive gynecologic surgery?
During traditional or conventional surgery, patients usually have a fairly large abdominal incision, longer hospital stays and longer recovery times. With minimally invasive gynecologic surgery options, there are one or more much smaller incisions, or in the case of surgeries performed vaginally or in our office, no incisions at all.
Our Dallas OB/GYNs opt for minimally invasive surgical techniques as often as possible because it is as effective as traditional surgery, but less painful. Additionally, patients experience fewer complications, and the recovery time is shorter. Many of these surgeries are office or outpatient procedures with no hospital stay required.
Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery options
If, after a thorough diagnostic process, our Dallas OB/GYNs determine you need surgery, they will discuss your options with you. The minimally invasive surgery options they may suggest include:
- Endometrial ablation — This procedure helps women with heavy bleeding. A thin probe, inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity, is used to perform techniques to destroy the uterine lining. It is often done in the comfort of our own office.
- Hysteroscopy — This technique, which can be used for both diagnostic and surgical purposes, uses a thin, lit device with a camera threaded through the vagina into the uterus. This allows the physician to clearly view the uterus and ascertain the problem. After, surgical instruments can be passed through the hysteroscope to perform surgical techniques such as removing uterine adhesions or performing permanent sterilization. Our Dallas OB/GYNs perform hysteroscopy using general or local anesthesia, and patients go home the day of surgery.
- Laparoscopy — Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery took a leap forward when laparoscopic techniques became available. During a laparoscopy, the surgeon inserts a laparoscope into one or more very small (usually less than one inch long) abdominal incisions. The laparoscope, equipped with a camera on the end, allows the surgeon to view the abdominal area and the pelvic organs while operating. Our physicians employ laparoscopy to treat many gynecological conditions, including: endometriosis, pelvic pain, cysts, polyps and fibroids, pelvic organ prolapse and more.
We can usually perform hysterectomies using minimally invasive surgery
Hysterectomies used to involve long hospital stays and six or more weeks of recovery, but minimally invasive gynecologic surgery options have changed that experience. In most instances, our doctors perform hysterectomies using laparoscopic or vaginal surgical techniques.
